BillSplit
Privacy policy
Last updated 24 August 2026
BillSplit is operated by Gidian Bateman. This policy explains what the BillSplit mobile app, web app, and website collect and how that information is handled.
What BillSplit collects
- The display name you enter when creating or joining a bill.
- Receipt photos you choose to scan.
- Receipt details, including the merchant, date, line items, prices, adjustments, currency, and total.
- Bill activity, including participants, item claims, shared-item selections, private tip settings, and paid confirmations.
- A random installation identifier, bill codes, and secret access tokens used to reconnect your device to a bill. The server stores hashed versions of installation identifiers and access tokens.
- Receipt-scan diagnostics, including the AI provider and model, image types, extracted response, errors, timing, and token usage.
- Technical request data that hosting and security providers process, such as IP address, browser or device information, and timestamps.
BillSplit does not require an account and does not collect advertising identifiers, contacts, precise location, or payment-card details.
How the information is used
We use this information to scan receipts, create and synchronize shared bills, calculate each participant's total, prevent abuse, troubleshoot failures, improve receipt extraction, answer support requests, and meet legal obligations.
BillSplit records whether a participant marks a share as paid, but it does not move money or process payments.
Service providers
BillSplit uses Convex for database, file storage, and server functions. Receipt photos are sent to the configured receipt-extraction provider, Google Gemini or OpenAI, so the provider can return structured receipt details. Website and app delivery providers may process ordinary request logs.
These providers process data to supply services to BillSplit. BillSplit does not sell personal information, use it for advertising, or allow providers to use it for their own advertising.
Retention
- Successful receipt photos and receipt-scan diagnostics are currently retained indefinitely so receipt scanning can be operated, debugged, and improved.
- Temporary receipt uploads that do not become a bill expire after about 15 minutes and are deleted by the cleanup process.
- Shared bill sessions and their participant, claim, tip, and paid-status data expire after about 7 days of inactivity.
- Names, installation identifiers, bill history, and access tokens stored on your device remain until you remove them through available app controls or clear the app's data.
- Support correspondence is kept as long as needed to answer the request and maintain reasonable records.
Deletion and privacy requests
Email support@billsplitcalc.app with the subject "Privacy request" to ask for access to or deletion of identifiable BillSplit data. Include the bill code and enough information to verify that you control the bill. Do not email a receipt photo or payment details. Some records may be kept where required by law or needed to prevent fraud and abuse.
Security
BillSplit encrypts network traffic with HTTPS and protects bills with unguessable capability tokens. No online service can promise absolute security, so share bill links and codes only with the people who need them.
Children
BillSplit is not designed to collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided personal information, contact us so we can investigate and delete it where appropriate.
Changes and contact
We may update this policy when the app or its service providers change. The date at the top shows the latest revision. Questions can be sent to support@billsplitcalc.app.
